«They said to him: in Bethlehem of Judea;» "for thus it is written by the prophet" (Matthew 2:5)
COMPLEMENTARY passage: Micah 5:2-4; Matthew 2:1-12; Luke 2:1-20
It is surprising... human beings lose great opportunities to meet God and enjoy his treatment of love and blessing. The sages of the time of Jesus, scholars of the Scriptures and, supposedly, connoisseurs of the prophecies, were witnessing the most extraordinary event in the history of humanity; the arrival of the awaited Messiah.
Before their eyes it was pursuant to large number of prophecies that for years had kept the faith and hope of the Jewish people. However, they were not diligent to inquire and verify if that child of Bethlehem, which had caused the journey of some wise Kings from very distant countries, born in the place and in the conditions announced by the prophecies, it could be the awaited Messiah.
They discarded right away that possibility, although the evidence indicated that the prophecy was fulfilled. They lost the wonderful opportunity to see with their own eyes the son of God and extasiar in the beauty of the Savior of the world.
On the contrary, the wise men, wise men and great wealth and power politics, attentive to the signs of the fulfillment of the prophecies, understood to see the signal, that the time had come. They could not miss this event. Overcoming discomfort, time and obstacles, traveled from distant countries to see with their own eyes the miracle of greater love that humanity had ever seen.
That blessing so large, contemplating the face of Jesus, to surrender before him, handing him the most precious treasures!
